Wildland Fire Rescue believes you should never stop training, you cannot get enough training, and you should be able to train others.

With that in mind, we strive to continue on the educational path no matter the field.  I once had an Engine Boss recently say, "Why take a course if you cannot use the course"?  Because we feel you can always gain something from it that may help you or others.  To that endeavor, we are always training in many different fields.

This has proven to be extremely useful.  Paramedics on the wildfire that are cross-trained can be of assistance in loading cargo nets, PAX briefings, mini-handcrew supervision, teaching other line EMTs' medical training, staging at water pump sites, human repeater, MEDL-Operations, and so much more.  And guess what, we have done that time and time again.

This has a couple of advantages:

  1. When the Paramedic skills are needed, we are always ready to go and most Safety Officers, Division Sups, Medical Unit Leaders, Helibase Managers, Operations, and ICs' appreciate that they can rely on someone that has multiple skills when called upon.
  2. It is a cost saving measure when you can place some at a water pump for a brief time or have a human repeater when needed instead of taking away from a crew.  And many line folks understand when the Paramedic is called away from that temporary duty.  They just hope everything turns out ok for the personnel needing the Paramedic.
